Art and DT

'Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up.'

Pablo Picasso

At Princes Risborough Primary School, art and design technology are taught through our ‘Create’ topics.

We strive to ensure that the teaching of design technology demands that pupils are inquisitive and brave in order to be successful. Pupils are encouraged to become independent, creative problem-solvers and thinkers, both as individuals and as part of a team. Our curriculum is planned so that pupils follow a process where evaluation and communication are key. We provide learning opportunities in design technology to allow our pupils to apply skills from across the curriculum; mathematics, science, computing and art – to design, make and evaluate products that solve real and relevant problems.

Pupils are encouraged to think creatively and imaginatively to design, make and evaluate products within a variety of contexts. We endeavour to develop the children’s critical thinking through critique and the evaluation of ideas and existing products. Our children develop a good understanding of where food comes from, the importance of a varied and healthy diet and how to prepare this through the implementation of food technology throughout our curriculum. We ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to carry out regular, practical activities in design technology linked to their ‘Create’ topics. Through our curriculum, we ensure that children leave their primary education with a secure understanding of the importance that design technology plays in the wider world.

Creativity, through art, craft and design is valued and celebrated at Princes Risborugh Primary School. The teaching of art through our ‘Create’ topics develops in pupils the self-belief needed in order to be creative.

Our art and design curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they think critically and develop a more comprehensive understanding of art and design. We encourage children to develop their creative and imaginative talents through learning skills and techniques and using a variety of materials and tools. They learn to appreciate works of art and use artistic language to describe paintings, sculptures and other artefacts. They are taught how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture and creativity of our nation.

Our children are taught, over time, about a range of artists, architects and designers. We want pupils to have the opportunity to explore and record their ideas and become proficient in drawing, painting and sculpting along with other art, craft and design techniques. We ensure that our pupils learn how to evaluate and analyse creative works using subject specific vocabulary. Ultimately, our children leave Princes Risborough Primary School with a strong knowledge and awareness of how art influences our society by changing opinions and instilling values.
